The Flats

The fire zone changes the install
The City of Beverly Hills designates its hillside area north of Sunset — plus a few blocks to the
south — a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.
For a solar customer that has two practical consequences. Mounting hardware and equipment placement
have to suit a wind-driven fire corridor, not just a suburban roof. And Public Safety Power Shutoffs
are a live possibility, which is where storage earns its cost: a grid-tied array without a battery
shuts down when the lines go down, by design, so an unbattery’d system produces nothing on exactly the
day you most want power.
Beverly Hills homes are billed by Southern California Edison,
with Clean Power Alliance available as the community choice energy option. Solar exports are credited
under California’s current net billing tariff, which pays less for exported power than the old net

The hillside area north of Sunset and a few blocks south of it are designated a Very High Fire
Hazard Severity Zone by the city. It affects mounting hardware and equipment placement, and it is the
main reason hillside customers add battery storage — a grid-tied array without a battery shuts off
during a Public Safety Power Shutoff.
Is battery storage worth it in Beverly Hills?
Two reasons it usually pencils here. California’s current net billing rules credit exported power
at a lower rate than the older net metering rules, so storing your own production is worth more than
selling it. And in the hillside fire zone, backup power during a shutoff has value that has nothing
to do with the bill.
Can you replace my roof at the same time?
Yes. If the roof has less than roughly ten years left, replacing it before the array goes on is
cheaper than removing and reinstalling panels later. We do both, so it is one contract and one crew
